School Sign Language Interpreter Jobs

Deaf students may have difficulty communicating with teachers and fellow classmates. School sign language interpreter jobs are available throughout the country in a variety of school settings to bridge the communication gap. This enables deaf students to earn the same quality education as any other student in the facility.

School sign language interpreters work in a school environment, be it elementary, middle school, high school, and sometimes college. The interpreters work with students and staff to convey messages back and forth between the deaf or hard of hearing and individuals who can speak but cannot communicate with sign language.

School sign language interpreter jobs are available directly with school districts and staffing agencies. Interpreters who are self employed, as nearly 22% of them are, may be able to land a school interpreter job as well. The typical work week follows that of a traditional school schedule, usually from 8 AM to 3 PM Monday through Friday. Some additional work may be required while school is not in session, but this is not enough to drastically deviate from a standard 40 hour work week. The position is not too stressful, though depending on the age of the student and complexity of the conversation, it may have its share of difficulties.

While there are currently not any universal certification requirements for school sign language interpreter jobs, applicants should be well versed in sign language and at least one other language, most commonly English. Knowledge of other languages may be beneficial. Most positions require three to five years of experience in interpretation, though some may allow for entry level applicants. Ideally, applicants should take a close look at each job to ensure they meet all specifications before applying. For those looking to gain experience in hopes of securing a position in the field, you can volunteer for organizations or private citizens willing to vouch you’re your experience and work ethic. Internships may also be able to help build experience.
