Special Education Teacher Responsibilities

Special education teachers work with children and students with varying disabilities. These disabilities can be physical, mental, emotional or learning. These teachers create and adapt lessons in subjects like math, writing, reading, and many more. Special education teachers also create Individualized Education Programs, assess students’ progress, supervise teaching assistants, and collaborate with other school professionals.

Special Education Teacher Requirements

The requirements to become a special education teacher are similar to those of becoming a general education teacher. At a minimum, special education teachers need a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education, Elementary Education, or another subject such as math or science. Every state requires public school educators to be licensed and certified. The specifics of these certifications vary by state, so make sure to check with your state's regulatory laws.

Typically special education teachers make more on average than general education teachers. As for the future of the special education teacher job, between 2016 and 2026 there are expected to be 33,300 new jobs, which is roughly an 8% growth in the occupation.

Teacher Consultant (SPED) needed in Howell, MI

In the Howell, Michigan area ProCare Therapy is looking for a full-time Teacher Consultant (SPED) to manage a high school caseload. The start date is immediate through the remainder of the school year. We have included bullet points below to review before applying. 

Job Details: 

  • Discipline Needed: Teacher Consultant (SPED)
  • Start Date/End Date: ASAP-June 11, 202
  • Hours per week:    36
  • Ages: 6-12th grade 

Summary of job: 

  • Students attend school Monday-Thursday 8-3, 3-4 is time where students stay back for additional help. There are about 8 students that attend school onsite and about 6 or 7 that are learning remotely. Fridays are planning day for teachers 8-12 and they can work remotely that day.
  • Teacher consultant will serve as resource room teacher and attend IEP meetings, but will not need to write IEPs. Another teacher consultant assisting with that.

Types of Disabilities:  Mild to moderate Learning Disabilities

Requirements: Master’s degree with 3 years of teaching experience. Certified to work with students K-12
