Job Description: Special Education Teacher

  • ASAP Start-5/31/24.
  • Caseload Size: 5/6 Students
  • Grades 5-8
  • Specialized instruction in a life skills program.
  • REQUIRED: CT General Special Education Certification-or surrounding state's.

A special education (SPED) teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to students with disabilities or special needs. Their job description may include the following responsibilities:

  1. Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Development: Collaborating with parents, other educators, and specialists to develop Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) tailored to each student's unique needs.

  2. Instructional Planning and Delivery: Creating and implementing lesson plans that address the diverse learning styles and needs of students with disabilities, including adapting curriculum materials and teaching methods as necessary.

  3. Assessment and Progress Monitoring: Assessing students' abilities and progress regularly to determine their strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. Using various assessment tools and methods to gather data and inform instructional decisions.

  4. Behavior Management: Developing and implementing strategies for managing behavior and fostering a positive learning environment. This may involve implementing behavioral interventions and providing support to students with behavioral challenges.

  5. Collaboration and Communication: Collaborating with general education teachers, administrators, support staff, and parents to ensure a cohesive and supportive educational experience for students with disabilities. Maintaining open and effective communication with all stakeholders regarding students' progress and needs.

  6. Resource Utilization: Utilizing available resources, such as instructional materials, technology, and support personnel, to enhance the learning experience and meet the needs of students with disabilities.

  7. Professional Development: Engaging in ongoing professional development to stay current with best practices in special education, including attending workshops, conferences, and training sessions.

  8. Advocacy: Advocating for the rights and needs of students with disabilities within the school community and beyond, including participating in IEP meetings and advocating for appropriate accommodations and services.

  9. Legal Compliance: Ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations governing special education, such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

  10. Crisis Intervention: Providing support and guidance during crises or emergencies involving students with disabilities, including implementing appropriate intervention strategies and coordinating with relevant professionals or agencies.

Overall, the role of a special education teacher is multifaceted, requiring a combination of instructional expertise, empathy, collaboration, and advocacy to support the diverse needs of students with disabilities and help them achieve their full potential.
