School Counselor Responsibilities

School counselors may have different duties and responsibility depending on the age of the children they are working with. Elementary school counselors help kids develop decision-making skills that will help them succeed academically and socially. Middle school counselors collaborate with school staff and parents to create a supportive environment for their students. Lastly, high school counselors help students path out their academic and career path, along with assisting them in overcoming any personal issues. If students have deeper psychological issues, school counselors may depend on a licensed professional clinical counselor to help the student.

School Counselor Requirements

School counselors are required to have a Master’s Degree in School Counseling, Psychology, or another related field. Each state has its own method of credentialing. States will either give you a certification or license after the completion of a test. ProCare’s credentialing team can assist with this process to ensure you are qualified to work in a specific state. Work experience, either through a degree program or internship, is also expected before full-time employment.

School Counselor Salary & Job Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, between 2016 and 2026, it is estimated that there will be 36,700 new school counselor jobs created, which equates to a 13% growth rate. Depending on what state and setting you work in will determine your yearly salary, but you can expect a higher paying school counselor job with a higher level of your education.

Remote School Counselor Job in Massachusetts

ProCare Therapy has partnered with a school district in the Massachusetts to fill a School Counselor position for the 2020 – 2021 school year.

This is a part-time position working with an 2nd – 8th grade caseload. Interested Speech Therapists are expected to work approximately 15 hours per week. Apply below with your resume for immediate consideration.


  • 2 Recent years of School based experience
  • Valid State License, Certifications, Credentials
  • Active Liability Insurance
  • Comfortable with 1099 employment

Job Details:  

  • Dates: ASAP - 3/31/21
  • 5 Hours Per Week
  • 5 Days Per Week
  • Work Schedule Options: M-F 12:30-3:30pm OR can be M/T/Th/F 1-4pm & W 12:30-3:30pm
  • 2nd - 8th Graders
  • Duties: Counseling, 504, IEP Meetings, attending student support team meetings (optional) as well as taking data and writing progress reports.
  • Candidate must be in MA
  • School Counselor Certification in MA Required
