The clinical fellowship year (CFY) provides you with rewarding experiences that are extremely important in the path to becoming a fully certified speech-language pathologist. It’s an exciting year where post-grads get hands-on experience in the field, finally putting all that knowledge into practice!

However, while exciting, ProCare Therapy knows more than anyone how intimidating the CFY application process can be for prospective SLPs. This is one reason why we created the ProCare Speech-Language Pathology Clinical Fellowship Program, a program that offers graduates support and guidance not only during the application process but throughout the CFY, guaranteeing placement in a fellowship that aligns with your career aspirations.

In this blog, our program experts provide everything there is to know about crafting the perfect cover letter for your clinical fellowship year application, including a step-by-step guide packed with tips and an SLP CFY cover letter sample so you can get off on the right foot.

Why are SLP CFY Cover Letters Important?

The cover letter is an important element of your clinical fellowship application as it gives you an opportunity to show hiring committees your passion for speech-language pathology. Cover letters are especially essential for clinical fellowship applications because resumes for this role typically do not include a lot of relevant professional experience; therefore, the cover letter gives applicants an opportunity to showcase the relevant experience they do have.

From the hiring committee’s perspective, this cover letter acts as an introduction to who you are, your philosophy around speech-language pathology, and what you can bring to the organization.

7 Steps to Writing the Perfect SLP CF Cover Letter

Below are seven essential steps to follow when crafting a cover letter for your SLP clinical fellowship application:

Step 1: Pre-Writing Preparation

Before reaching for pen and paper, take the time to research the fellowship program or organization you’re applying to. Browse their website and take notes on topics like the organization’s core values, qualifications and skills they are looking for, how they describe the care they provide, frequently used descriptors and phrases, their philosophy and approach to speech-language pathology, and how they define their culture. These key insights will come in handy when crafting your cover letter. By taking the time to craft the letter specifically for the organization, you’ll show the hiring committee your understanding of the practice and spotlight yourself as a great fit for the program.

Step 2: Set Up the Formatting and Structure

Next, create an outline of your cover letter by setting up the formatting and structure. The cover letter should be formatted using 1” margins and single-line spacing. It should be typed using a simple, professional font style, like Times New Roman or Arial, in an 11-12 pt size. The cover letter should be no longer than one page. Be sure to outline your draft with the following elements:

  • Your address and contact information
  • The date
  • Hiring manager’s and/or organization’s contact information
  • Salutation
  • Introduction paragraph, 1-2 middle paragraphs, closing paragraph
  • Sign-off and contact information

Step 3: Craft the Introduction

This first paragraph should act as the SLP CFY letter of introduction, and it allows you to really show off your technical qualifications and expertise! To start the first paragraph, concisely explain the position you’re applying for and how you found the job opportunity. Next, provide the reader with context surrounding your current educational experience, what stage you’re currently at on the route to becoming an SLP, and a brief introduction to why you’re applying for this specific role.

Step 4: Sell Yourself

Following this introduction, the middle paragraph(s) should be loaded with personalization and used to sell yourself as the perfect fellow for this role. Utilizing your initial research on the job and organization or program, be sure to make the connection between what the role is looking for and the qualities you have.

In this paragraph, you expand on any previous SLP-related experience you have, including areas of specialty, and share why you have a passion for this career. This section should be used to show off any relevant information about yourself and real-world experiences that can’t be found on your resume, so consider what you can share to make yourself stand out. Don’t be afraid to brag about who you are and the kind of SLP you one day aspire to be.

Step 5: Close Strong

Finally, the concluding paragraph should be brief and include a call to action. Open the final paragraph with a clear statement summarizing everything you’ve written above on why you would be the perfect fellow for the role. Next, let the hiring manager know that you are looking forward to a follow-up and thank them. This conclusion should be followed by a professional sign-off.

Step 6: Proofread and Edit

Once you’re happy with the content and the information you provide in your SLP CFY cover letter, it’s time to start the editing process. Read the cover letter through, making sure there are no grammar or spelling errors or errors in the formatting and information you provide. It’s essential that SLP CFY cover letters are free from errors, as the role requires someone who is detail oriented. Having friends and family proofread your cover letter and using tools like online grammar and spell checkers are additional ways to ensure your cover letter is ready!

I am writing to apply for the Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) Clinical Fellowship position at ABC Pediatric Therapy. I learned of this opportunity through I will receive my Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of SLP this spring. During this master’s program, I have gained a wealth of experience in assessing, diagnosing, and treating a variety of communication disorders in adolescents.

My interest in this position originates from my specialization in helping young children overcome speech and language disorders. Throughout my previous educational and clinical experience, I have developed a passion for diagnosing and administering speech therapy to young children. Providing these patients with the tools, resources, and treatment that they need to use their voices with confidence has been a deeply rewarding experience, and I am eager to continue expanding my knowledge under the expertise of one of ABC Therapy’s exceptional mentors.

I am well-versed in the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Code of Ethics and Professional Standards and understand the clinical requirements of the SLP Clinical Fellowship. I am empathic, detail-orientated, and candidly excited about the potential opportunity to strengthen my communication skills through ABC’s clinical fellowship role.

I am eager to take the next step in the path to becoming a certified speech-language pathologist, and I am committed to helping children reach their communication and language goals alongside the instruction of a fellowship mentor. I look forward to hearing from you and discussing my qualifications in greater detail. Thank you for your time and consideration.
